Ghost Sightings At Haunted Hotels

Have you experienced first hand a ghostly encounter while staying at a hotel or on a ghost tour? Write us and let us know the details. We will post here for all to read.

ST. FRANCIS INN, ST. Augustine, Florida

Approximately 2:15am a tall, slender Hispanic male, dark, wiry hair pulled back into a short ponytail, dressed in a white silky shirt and dark trousers, appeared on the left side of the room. He paced back and forth in the space between the bed and the dressing table from the window to the open door leading to the sitting room. He exited the door leading into the sitting room. An older male, dressed in brown, with a brown tri-cornered hat, appeared from the left side of the room, walked on through to the sitting room. Neither seemed to be aware of the two people in the bed.

CANYON FERRY MANSION BED & BREAKFAST INN, Townsend, Montana

Dear HA Staff,

We had a Haunted Honeymoon at Canyon Ferry Mansion Bed and Breakfast in the Fall of 2008, a “High-Stylin’ Cowboy” Inn & Historical Country Wedding Chapel. The home was built by a famous Montana Entrepreneur, Cattle Baron & Railroad Builder AB.Cook. The story of his Society Wife, Gorgeous Daughters, & Philanthropic Son is one of Majesty, Mystery, and Murder. There are 4 Murders, 3 Manipulated Wills, and a host of Spiritual Controversies due to a Manipulating Lawyer and outside Political Forces. As a Gothic Couple, we wanted to Elope in secret… avoiding meddling family and long months of agonizing planning. We searched the internet in vain . . .either the Haunted Honeymoon packages were too hokey, too expensive, or had no elopement services at all, not even Wedding chapels near by.

Owners; Steve & Sandy Rose have restored the handsome sprawling house & charming country church over looking Canyon Ferry Lake between the Elkhorn & Big Belt Mountains near Townsend, Montana just south of it’s Capital Helena, an easy destination to get to by rental car from the airport. This is an area in Gold*West Country is popular with Montana sports enthusiasts and Rock Hounds year round, known statewide for it’s hidden untouched Ghost Towns, Fall festivals, fishing, hunting, & ice sailing.

Our experience there was the culmination of our love, our hobby of Ghost Hunting, and our dream of a Haunted Honeymoon. But to find a chapel that has a history of Spirits as well, was more than we could have imagined. Upon arrival at the pillared entrance, The Roses and their staff treated us royally…the special décor for the Fall was based on Dickens’s famous novel “Great Expectations”…not the macabre… but with dried flowers, cobwebs and candlesticks… everywhere a mantel or antique table, or buffet would allow. Licensing procedures were completed but to our disappointment…no Blood Test…just kidding…who likes needles? Now for the fun!

On our first night in the old Cook Mansion, we dined on old family favorites, comfort foods blending tastes of the Old South and the Wild West, from the Cook Family past. After dessert & coffee, we were then treated to an Historic Tour in dimmed lights from antique light fixtures including a boarded up secret passage way, and a Ghost Review our … including Seven Ghosts and one Poltergeist.
The next day after a fabulous Fall Breakfast by the Fire, the morning was spent wondering the grounds, and steaming Warm Springs area, with our EFP meter taking readings at the sights of bloody Murders & shocking Mayhem. we soaked in the Hot Tub with Witch’s Brew Herbs and had melt-down Massages, and a nap. Then we dressed in Black & Burgundy for our private Elopement Nuptials. Sandy presented me with a real “Black Rose” Bouquet & pinned matching Boutonnière on my husband to be.

After a late romantic Candlelight Dinner in this Cattle Baron home, at a table set with fine china & linen, of prime Montana Beef & Poached Salmon prepared by talented chef Steve, laced with magical “Good Luck” herbs from Lori’s window Garden, and more romantic Ghost Stories told by Sandy, along with plenty of dark roast coffee, we headed to the Chapel at Mid-night. The chapel edifice with Gothic Windows is softly lit, but has 2 dark windows in the steeple. The harvest moon gleamed on the lake behind us.

There an officiate in old judges robes and candlelight greeted us while dark organ music played in the Background, and preformed our ceremony including a reading from Edgar Allen Poe, all the while Sandy was snapping photos and Lori the multi-talented housekeeper shooting Video. Later back at the Mansion just a short walk in the eerie night, our secret Marriage was celebrated by a Toast of vintage Wine we brought for the occasion, and a miniature Red Velvet Wedding Cake in the historic Ballroom. Sandy took more photos in the “Victorian Style” by the 1892 Steinway Piano, the huge elaborate Mantel , and on the Foyer Steps and that’s where the story gets really bizarre!
Hanging in the foyer from a Chandelier was a White Sheet decked out in a gauzy white wedding veil, as the aged Mrs. Haversham, the ghostly Bride, from the novel theme previously mentioned. We asked if we could have our picture taken with the ghostly form just for fun, and Sandy agreed. To our amazement, after reviewing our wedding photos the next morning before check-out on Sandy’s computer, including several Orbs in the chapel shots, there were eyes behind the mask in the foyer... to all’s surprise.

Printing out the photo in full 8.5 x 11 format, and calling the entire staff, we all headed to the hall to examine the Ghostly Mask . . . nothing was there to have caused the eyes in the photo, just blank white sheet. To say the least we were absolutely astounded. To this day we say this extraordinary photo made our wedding trip worth every penny... and believe me the cost was “Pennies compared to anything in Las Vegas or back East. Thank You Canyon Ferry Mansion… we had a unforgettable “Titillating good Time” and will be back for our “Anniversary of Auras”.

HOTEL CONGRESS, Tucson, Arizona

For those of us who worked there, it became fairly entertaining. For a few unfortunate guests I believe it was very chilling. I will list a few of the ghosts I know to have been there as I'd seen them myself (as well as other people describing the same ghosts). There were a little boy and girl about 7 or eight in the halls of the second floor, a man with a pinstripe gangster type suit seen mostly on the first floor, a woman bedecked in a dark, high button up collar and long wool skirt (old school librarian-ish) who liked to occupy the front desk area, the frightening feel of room 214 who liked to pull the plug on the vacuum when the housekeepers were cleaning and whom would go away calmly when you put a radio station on that played 1920's music, The cold spot and sometimes dark shadow in front of room 242 who we believe was the lady who shot herself there. room 240..on rare occasion if you looked out the window, modern day Tucson wouldn't be there and all you would see was an old train on the railroad tracks and stagecoaches and horses, also in this room was reported a bloody handprint. There are numerous other things that have happened, some leading to a guest leaving immediately after and never returning. You really should check out this hotel.

Sincerely,
Not a superstitious person, but a ex-employee and housekeeper who has seen more than enough at Hotel Congress to believe in the supernatural.

SHERATON GUNTER HOTEL, San Antonio, TX

A majority of the staff who work here have seen or experienced a paranormal occurrence. There are two major ghosts whom we know of but there could be more. A lot of the occurrences happen at night after ten o'clock throughout the hotel. In 1965, an unidentified woman was murdered at the historic hotel and her restless spirit is said to haunt the premises. Since this terrible incident, staff and guest have reported strange occurrences in the vicinity of the sixth floor.

Tony from housekeeping and a fellow associate were cleaning the bar on a graveyard shift as a bar patron said from behind then, "How about a cold one for the road?" The two housekeepers turned quickly to the patron behind them as an old man was sitting at the bar leaning over towards them. The two quickly looked at each other wondering who this gentleman was and as they looked back towards the patron he was gone.

One guest was in room 617, the room next to Room 620. He told me he thought he had a noisy neighbor next store in 620.He kept hearing someone in the bathroom of 620. Around 1:30am he was woken by a loud gun shot coming from that bathroom. He then heard sawing coming from 620.He came down to the front desk to complain. We checked and Room 620 was vacant that night. The same night another guest completely unrelated to him heard the exact same thing.

An executive at the hotel who has been at the hotel for some time says that a woman in ghostly garb has been seen numerous times near room 636 where the murder took place.

The MCGARRAH STAGECOACH TAVERN INN (Monroe, NY)
On of the common sightings is a man with top hat, dress in a dark suit wondering the rooms upstairs. My friend, who witness the ghost imagine attempted to confront the man by running to his direction, but as ghost turned the corner, the man vanished. The Ghostly man is described about 5ft, dress in a dark suit style in 1800 with top hot. You could hear his footstep as he walks back and forth on the second floor.

The basement is truly a frightening experience. As we enter the basement stars the temperature would dropped at least 15 degrees. EMF went wild as you get closer to the fireplace. As the hairs on the back of my neck reacted to chills, you can actually feel ghostly pressure surrounding you. The sounds of Ghostly footsteps wondering have become a common occurrence at this inn.

FRACKSVILLE, PA

I was wondering if there were any reports on Granny's Motel in Frackville, PA. I stayed there every weekend for four years and on several occasions things happened. I'm usually very skeptical about these things, but there was one time that I just couldn't give an
excuse for. I was in my room sleeping and always had an uneasy feeling that someone was watching. In the middle of the night I saw the door open to my room and a man in a cowboy hat and jeans walked in and looked angry. He kept walking towards the bed with his arms
extended at me. I thought that I was dreaming, but I wasn't. As he came closer I started to scream and felt his cold hands grasp around my throat and I kicked and pushed as hard as I could until my room mate reached over from the other bed and turned on the light.
Needless to say I couldn't sleep for the rest of the night. Other times I would still have the feeling of being watched and as soon as I got into the room I would pulled the shades and make sure they were down before I turned the lights out. In the morning every shade in
the room would be up and I would jump out of my sleep feeling as if I were watched. I don't know if others have had anything with that old motel (the restaurant part is an old victorian house). I really want to know if anything has happened there.

SEAVIEW, GALLOWAY, NJ
Wow- I cannot believe that no one has ever written in about the Seaview, in Galloway, NJ. We just returned from a short stay there, and when I shared part of my story with a front desk employee, he said that he has heard many similar stories. It turns out that our room was located in the original wing of the hotel.

We stayed in room 153, a spacious suite that seemed lovely at first. My husband experienced this negativity as simply a vibe; I picked up on more anger and sadness. I don't think that anyone there wanted to hurt us, though my husband did become ill during our stay (fever, headache, nausea). Hmmm...virus or paranormal manifest?

Neither of us slept well in the main bed area. We were each up for hours at a time in the nights. While I was checking on our son in the large dining/sitting area adjacent to our room, and on our daughter in the smaller bath and closet area also adjacent on the other side to our room, I noticed that both rooms were many degrees cooler than in our room- and no doors had been closed preceding my check. There was only one temperature control for the whole suite. Interestingly, the next night, the temps were uniform throughout the suite.

The next night, while I was putting my son to bed, I watched the lovely chandelier over the dining table swaying gently- no violent swinging, but I got the feeling that someone wanted us to notice.

I am pretty open-minded and embracing of those who have entered the spirit world, but I have to say that one area of the suite really made my skin crawl. The long hallway that runs behind the sitting/dining area includes an old-fashioned bar and half bath, and just felt very old...and occupied, like the bar had seen many gatherings. Overall, the room felt alive, and I feel silly saying this, but like something out of The Shining.

Upon arriving home, I smudged our entire family (and stuffed animal friends) with a sage stick...we thanked the spirits of the Seaview for sharing their presences with us...and encouraged them to stay right there!

Thank you for this opportunity to share. I would be very interested to know if anyone else has had similar experiences!

1846 Battery Carriage House Inn, Charleston, SC
“Recently during Spoleto my parents and I had the pleasure of staying at your Inn. I requested room 10 because I had heard about the Gentleman Ghost and also about the headless torso in room 8, so naturally I picked room 10.

I had a very strange experience the first night at the Inn. Right from the start I had the feeling that I was being observed. Even while I was unpacking my bags I could almost swear someone was behind me. Anyway, as the night progressed I was feeling more and more unnerved. So I read some passages from my Bible, hoping that would calm me down. I picked the 23rd Psalm and I read it aloud about 10 times. I put particular emphasis where it says “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will feel [sic] no evil”. During the time I started reciting the psalm, the whole feeling of the room changed. It went from a really weird feeling to one of extreme negativity. I had to quit reading the Bible because the whole feeling of the room went from bad to worse. Needless to say, I even slept with my Bible, but I got very little sleep that first night. I sincerely thought that if I feel asleep all hell was going to break loose!

The next morning I was walking down the balcony to the stairs around 7:00 am and as I rounded the corner to the stairs, I distinctly heard heavy footsteps coming towards me on the stairs, and as I thought it might be another guest, I turned to say good morning but as I turned around the footsteps stopped, so I waited for about 4 seconds and then as I turned back towards the stairs and started down them. I distinctly saw someone come around the corner, and when I turned to greet them, there was no one there. Looking back I truly believe that something or someone followed me out of the room. But at the time I just shrugged it off as seeing my first ghost at your Inn. Well, the second night went just fine. Room 10 and I had a silent pact, that everything would be fine as long as I didn’t start reciting my bible out loud.

I know from past experiences that ghosts use doors, hallways and stairways to go from the past to the future. Also they seem to be drawn to attics and they don’t like to be disturbed. I do have to ask you, was there ever a door to the main house where the TV console now sits? I believe there was one once. If so, then that is where the Gentleman Ghost comes through the wall.

I would love to stay at your Inn again even in room 10 because now I now what not to do in the room. If I can be of service, please feel free to call---thanks again for an unbelievable experience. The Staff at the Inn, especially N, K and B were very knowledgeable about the history of the Inn and also of Charleston itself, and they deserve a pat on the back. I would highly recommend the Inn to anyone wishing to stay at an elegant resort.

Sincerely,
CP”

Guests of The Magnolia Mansion in New Orleans report witnessing all types of paranormal activity. Check this story out:
Hey Hollie,

Have you ever seen anything like this? Roberta and I were walking back from the little collection of stores at the end of your street. We had found some great items to take home with us on Sunday. It was getting late and the bags were heavy with all the things we just bought, so we decided to head back to the house, drop off the bags and call a cab to go to dinner. While we were waiting out front, I decided to take some pictures of Roberta standing in front of MM. It was about 6pm, the night was clear and there wasn't anyone around us.  The first picture was a mistake, the camera just went off in my hands; the second was the intended shot. We've had several professional photographers examine the pictures and the negatives and none can come up with any kind of explanation other than, what you see is in the picture. Whatever was there was captured on those two frames. Creepy "and" cool!

Take care and best wishes,

Mark and Roberta
